ACCESS of Japan announces OMA DRM support included with PCSS March 17, 2003 By DRM Watch Staff
ACCESS of
Japan announced
an extension of its Premium Content Subscription Server (PCSS)
that supports DRM functionality compliant with the OMA Download
spec, which includes a subset of the ODRL rights language.
Nokia has also introduced OMA Download compliance in its handsets,
starting with model 3595.
These two events provide evidence for the OMA Download spec
being more than just paperware. ACCESS is best known for
NetFront, its powser software for wireless devices; Nokia,
Samsung, and NEC are among the handset makers that have
incorporated NetFront into their products. PCSS is
server-side content management and distribution software for
delivery of premium content, including MMS messages, J2ME
applications, and ring tones to wireless devices.
Nokia has been the prime mover behind the OMA Download spec.
Its new devices implement "forward lock" functionality,
which prevents users from passing content to others through the
wireless network. To complete the picture, content providers
need to create desirable content and make it available through
these services. If consumers buy in, then another important
niche market for DRM will be born.
