OverDrive announced
Tuesday
that it has added support for MobiPocket's publishing format for portable
devices and will be hosting over 10,000 titles in the format in its Content
Reserve repository. OverDrive now supports every major DRM-enabled eBook
format, including Microsoft Reader, Adobe Reader, and Palm Digital Media in
addition to MobiPocket.
Paris-based MobiPocket established itself in 2000 as a format for multiple
PDAs and, after an initial period of relative inactivity, is now capitalizing on
the proliferation of wireless platforms that can serve as eBook readers.
Through a single file format and multiple reader software, it supports Palm OS,
Symbian, Pocket PC, Microsoft SmartPhone 2002, Franklin EBookMan, and other
portable device platforms as well as Windows PCs. (Although MobiPocket supports
Palm devices, OverDrive will continue to support Palm Digital Media format as
well.)
With this announcement, OverDrive becomes the second repository of MobiPocket-format content available
to retail websites; the other,
eBookBase, was
launched in partnership with Franklin Electronic Publishers, MobiPocket's
part-owner, last month.
